Sash (Selendang) Lasem/North Java

Sash (Selendang) A Sash (Selendang) is a women’s scarf that is worn over the hair during high holidays or family celebrations (weddings, circumcisions and funerals). This piece was made with the batik tulis technique, which uses a spouted wax can called a tjanting.

The ornamentation in this Javanese cloth shows strong influences from the composition of Indian chintz textiles, especially the tree of life motif with open, variegated blossoms.
