Gendje Central Caucasus

Gendje Gendje (also spelled Ganja), today the second largest city in Azerbaijan, lies in the heart of the Caucasus along the railway line from Baku to Tiflis and was once an important trade city. Rugs with this attribution come from the surrounding area and often have rather irregular patterns.

This both striking and balanced rug has an inner field with six octagons surrounded by a massive ivory-coloured “crab”/Harshang border. The Memling göls with a star centre inside the octagons also have a powerful effect. The small, sparingly used scattered motifs are also lovely
